Hello everyone, I’m finally ready to review The Awakened Fate Ultimatum. Before I start the review, I just want to mention that a digital review copy was provided by NIS America.

The game starts off with the protagonist Shin Kamikaze having a dream, in which a girl is talking to him, he can’t really make out exactly what the mystery girl is saying, and soon afterwards is woken up by his classmate and friend Eri Shiranui. Shin decides to walk home after parting ways with Eri. While walking home Shin notices that he has been walking around in circles and can’t find his way back home, but that’s the least of his problems. He is soon surrounded by people with wings, which turn out to be devils. One of the devils approaches Shin and tells him that he needs to die, the devil takes his sword and stabs Shin through the chest. As Shin lays dying a woman comes to Shin’s aid, she makes easy work of the devils and takes you to this world called Celestia.

After Shin’s taken to Celestia he is revived and greeted by Ariael Agarie and Jupiel Soraumi, which is the Angel who brought you to Celestia. I don’t want to spoil too much, but Ariael is the one who resurrected Shin, she embedded him with a special crystal called the fate awakening crystal, and gave him the powers to become God.

The story within The Awakened Fate Ultimatum is presented much like a visual novel, sadly the character portraits have little to no movement, it would have been nice to see some movement in the character portraits during story events, but in my opinion it’s not a deal. Early on in the story you will be presented with certain choices you have to make as God, one such choice happens when a group of devils attacks Celestia, Shin sees that a group of Angels have been injured, you are given two choices, you can save them or you can stop the invading devils and reduce the number of angels that die, these choices are all very important, and have an epic on the overall story, I won’t spoil what happens depending on the choice you make. Depending on which choices you make, you will gain CP points with Ariael or Jupiel, these points can be spent on upgrading your Angel and Devil powers.

I also want to comment on the voice acting within the game, I played the game with the English voice acting, and I have to say that I was completely blown away. The English voice acting within the game was fantastic, every character I encountered during the story sounded great, I can honestly say I have no complaints with the voice acting, and the English voice actors all did a great job. I also have to mention that the game features dual audio, so if you don’t like the English voice acting, you can turn on the Japanese voices instead. Another thing I found myself enjoying was the soundtrack, all the music in the game is amazing, and I have no complaints about it.

Now let’s get into the actual combat within the game. Early on you are given the ability to deitize, this ability lets you quickly switch between your Angel and devil forms, you can cycle between these forms with the triggers on your controller. The ability to deitize comes in handy, lets say if you encounter a devil type enemy, you can trigger your angel form and gain an advantage over the enemy, you will also deal slightly more damage when you counter your enemy with either the angel or devil form, but you can’t simply stay in angel or devil form forever since they both consume SP, also while in Angel or Devil forms, you can unleash powerful attacks with the left bumper, these attacks use a large amount of SP, so use them wisely because if you run out of SP you will be unable to deitize.

Another thing you need to pay attention to is the AC gauge, it slowly depletes as you walk around in the dungeons, if the gauge reaches 0 you will take one damage for every step you take, this will quickly lead to your death. Thankfully the AC gauge can be replenished with items you find within the dungeons, like apples.

If you’re familiar with rogue-like games, you know that if you die in a dungeon, you lose all of your items and weapons, some people may find this annoying, but I honestly found myself really enjoying it since it added a true sense of risk and reward. I actually died a few times while playing the game, I was walking around and killing every enemy I could find within the dungeon I was in. I was so confident in myself and the weapon I had that I just kept fighting everything and anything I saw, but my fun soon came to an end, all of a sudden I came across a powerful enemy, I honestly can’t remember what it was called, but it hit me two times and I died, to make matters worse I forgot to save before I went into the dungeon, so I lost all the gear I had when I went into the dungeon. Thankfully within the games menu, it has an option called “store house” within that menu you can store whatever items you want, I highly recommend you keep your spare weapons in the store house, the last thing you want is to be carrying around all your weapons and items since you run the risk of dying and losing everything.

The Awakened Fate Ultimatum also features an extensive skill tree, in the form of two wings. The left-wing is home to stat boosts and angel type abilities, while the right side has abilities and stat boosts for the devil form. It’s important that you don’t waste all your points on just one side of the skill tree because if one side is strong and the other is weak, you will have a hard time fighting enemies that are weak to the form you neglected.

In closing my experience with The Awakened Fate Ultimatum was a positive one. I plan on going back and doing another play-through of the game. If you’re a fan of rogue-like games then you can’t go wrong with the Awakened Fare Ultimatum. If you’re new to the genre and you’re interested in getting into it, then I personally think you will really like the game. The games combat is enjoyable and solid, I constantly felt like going back to revisit dungeons just to get better weapons. I also felt that the story was great, I never once felt bored while I was listening to story events play out, I was always interested in what was going on, and I think people out there looking for a game that has great story and solid game play will enjoy it too.

I give the Awakened Fate Ultimatum a 9.0/10
